Hello! My name is Sents. I’m a Grade 10 student, and I have a class project related to innovation. I’m interested in how people with visual impairments cook—what methods they currently use, how they prepare food, and whether it feels difficult.

For example, how do you know when the food is fully cooked? How do you check if the ingredients you have are fresh? Are there any assistive tools or innovations that already exist—or ones you wish existed—that you think would be very helpful?

Lastly, I’d like to know whether people with visual impairments often cook for themselves or if they tend to buy ready-made food more frequently.

I would like to kindly ask for your time to answer these questions so I can use the information to develop ideas for better solutions. After you’re done, we can chat casually if you’d like, or you can share other challenges you experience in daily life.
Thank you so much for your cooperation! :D

Hello! My name is Nutttapol, and I’m happy to share my experience as a visually impaired person who has learned to cook.
When I was younger, I never cooked at all. But when I was about nine years old, a teacher from a school for the blind came to teach me how to cook simple food. I learned how to cook rice and make grilled sticky rice. Later, I started cooking small dishes by myself, like steaming eggs in a rice cooker or boiling instant noodles.
I am a low-vision person, so I can still see a little bit. When I was ten, I practiced frying eggs and making omelets. For boiling food, I use a timer to know when it is done. For frying, like eggs, I depend on sound, smell, and heat to guess when the food is ready.
I don’t have any special tools to check whether ingredients are fresh. So I usually rely on smell and touch, and most importantly, I buy ingredients from shops that I trust. Because of this, and because cooking can be difficult, I don’t cook very often today.
Right now, I mostly eat ready-made food. I am 27 years old, and I often buy meals from convenience stores because I can heat them in the microwave easily. When I was in university, I also bought food from made-to-order restaurants.
If I do cook now, it is usually something simple, like sukiyaki-style soup or other boiled dishes, because they are safer and easier for me to manage.
Thank you for giving me the chance to share my experience. I hope this information helps your project!
